beauty, after is part of my ongoing beauty project, which began in 2019. Written for piano and percussion, with optional electronics and lighting, the work continues an extended exploration of the concept of beauty through sound, performance, and perception. The piece has been performed a few times by percussionist Josh Perry and pianist Yumi Suehiro as part of ensemble mise-en’s concert series, including presentations at MISE-EN_PLACE and the MISE-EN Festival 2026. Occupied (2026) is my second collaboration with visual artist Jinjoo Yang. In creating the sound and composing the music for this work, I focused closely on the visual material, allowing the imagery to guide my sonic decisions. Rather than illustrating the video directly, I sought to develop a musical language that resonated with my own response to the work. The piece explores a wide spectrum of frequencies as a primary compositional element, from subtle high-frequency textures to powerful sub-bass vibrations. A few months ago, Tobias Fandel, the organizer of the Overdrive Festival, asked if I would be interested in presenting my work with lighting. Although I already had a piece involving lighting and impulse response, I wanted to create something new. Around the same time, I had been discussing the idea of writing a piece for contrabass flute with Kelley Barnett—long-time collaborator and member of ensemble mise-en. I had started that piece but hadn’t finished it as planned. I’m pleased to share details about an upcoming concert program featuring the talented Josh Perry. This performance will highlight new and recent works for solo percussion, interwoven with a variety of live and fixed electronic elements. It will showcase four pieces created in close collaboration with composers Seong Ae Kim, Dennis Sullivan, and myself, Moon Ha.
